Chapter Twenty-Four
âA god?â Vic was incredulous, as were the other members of their little party. âWhat kind of god are we talking?â
Samedi regarded him with a look that was both intrigued and made it clear that at least part of him thought he was being an idiot. âMaybe I have not been keeping up with modern English vernacular, but does âgodâ have multiple meanings now?â
âWell, it means all-powerful being, sure, but are we talking a Cthulhu type of dealâtentacles and madness and all thatâor more like the all-knowing, loving God the Christians are into nowadays? The one youâd invite to the cookout to share stories and a cuddle?â
âDoes anyone hear thunder and lightning?â Johnny asked and Annie listened intently before she caught his joke and she frowned.
Samedi mimicked her expression and narrowed his eyes at him. âIs this attempt at humor your way of dealing with the severity of the situation, Detective?â
He shrugged. âHey, in this gig, you gotta be able to look death in the face and laugh.â
âEspecially if youâve already dealt with it once,â his partner quipped.
The baron sighed but gave what looked like an appreciative or at least understanding nod. âI suppose so. Perhaps that is necessary to carry you through to the end of this.â He looked around the room. âI suppose if you wonât take my warnings seriously with only words to convince you, I should show you what awaits if we do not stop Kriminel and his partner.â
Before they could ask what he intended, he appeared in front of Johnny and Annie, raised his hands, and clamped them on their heads, and the world quite literally went gray. The room seemed to disappear and they stood in a purely monochrome space.
Johnny knocked the loaâs hand off of him. âWhat the hell did you do?â he demanded.
âI brought you to the path.â He looked at Vic. âAh. good. It seems your connection allowed me to bring him along as well, which saves me a trip.â
âThe path?â Annie looked around. âWhat is the path? Iâve never heard of it.â
âThatâs not surprising. It is mostly the domain of myself and my fellow keepers.â He gestured around the blank domain. âAlthough every ghost travels through here on their death, they do not remember it. This is where their soul awaits their judgment. It does not have a fancy name and is simply the path that leads from life to deathâor vice versa in special circumstances but there hasnât been one of those in over a couple of millennia.â
The young detective looked down and froze for a moment as all he saw was a seemingly infinite void of nothing. âAll ghosts forget theyâve been here? That seems convenient.â He craned his neck casually. âI guess that means you canât vouch for what heâs saying, eh, Vic?â No response came from the often surly ghost. âVic?â He looked at his partner, who stared above them, seemingly mesmerized by something. âSamedi, whatâs wrong with him? Does this place affect ghosts differently?â
âThat ainât it, kid,â Vic croaked and continued to stare into the space above.
